This hurts. Ace was one of my favorites. Even in the thick of things Ace and I would find something to laugh about. He always smiled and was fun to be around. I remember in one battle Ace was hit by shrapnel under his eye while we were laying against a rice paddy dike. I watched him wipe the blood off and go about his business. The last time we talked at one of our Charlie Company Reunions, I told him that I would try to help him get a Purple Heart but he told me no. This is truly a sad day.Clarence Shires – 1st Platoon August 14, 2009 |
I will send my condolences to the family. I remember Ben well, He came up to me years ago at one of our first reunion over twenty years ago and said, ” Hello John”, just like that out of the blue he remembered me – I was pleasently surprised and shocked as it had been over 22 years that we had fought together in that war and he knew who I was right off the bat. I will never forget that about Ben, he was a true brother. He will be missed
